I've known for a while now that one of the co-captains Brett Kirk was into his Buddhism and now it seems it's spreading through.
On the weekend they got a visit from the Dalai Lama.
Apparently Jude Bolton thought that listening to a two minute chant was enough to understand their "deep culture"...
"You see them chant and just appreciate that they have such a deep culture, it was amazing to even get that one- or two-minute insight into what they are about," Bolton said.
I'm not sure that listen to a chant means you get any insight into what Buddhists are on about Jude... but oh well... I'm also not sure that chanting = deep culture... but perhaps when compared to a culture of playing footy and drinking lots of beer I can understand where he's coming from in his assessment!

I definitely wouldn't argue that there is no depth in Buddhism. My only qualm is that it rests on the assumption that we can somehow do something to get ourselves out of this messy world.
ReplyDeletewould depend how you define depth. And if depth had to relate to truth... maybe. But if it refers to discipline and being counter cultural and having a rich history, then yes obviously there is depth there.
